ETERNAL CIRCLE

Eternal Circle, the new work created by Mr. Nakanishi, is an extension of his artistic journey, inspired by the artist’s experience in the Swiss mountains for the first chapter.

For this latest piece, Mr. Nakanishi employed his “Stripe Drawing” technique, a centuries-old Eastern approach to hand-drawing that consists of countless vertical lines drawn free-hand by the artist. Eternal Circle is composed of a 60-piece row of individual stripe drawings of horizontal lines and blank spaces. When all aligned, the individual pieces total an astounding 24 metres, one for every hour of the day. Installed in an endless loop, they create an eternal image end-to-end – a flowing representation of past, present and future in which the last drawing of the sequence meets the first and blurs beginning and end into a single, eternal whole.

PLATINUM

The drawings have been digitalised to create a film accompanied by Mr. Richter’s Platinum track composed and recorded exclusively for La Prairie, complimenting the flowing loop of stripe drawings with an emotional, soaring rhythm. This digital expression brings a layer of the future to an artpiece inspired by ancient drawing techniques, fused in the present.

THE JOURNEY

For this iteration, rather than accentuating the notion of time suspended as he did in The Platinum Moment, Mr. Nakanishi took a conceptual foray into the realm of eternity, the dream of which is the inspiration for La Prairie’s latest creation.

“The presence of mountains heaved up over an extraordinary amount of time, the touch of wind and air I felt there, the expanse of night sky – these things make me feel like being human is an ephemeral existence,” said Mr. Nakanishi. “This led me to develop a hand drawn work featuring the beauty of Swiss nature, particulary moutains and clouds, that repeat endlessly,” he added.
